Bold And Beautiful X Jet Wings X Jet Airways

The bridal season in India is at its full swing. Right from jewellery in trend or that makes a mark, selecting your jewellery or styling it, I state it all! So sit back and fasten your seatbelt as I take you through the runway fashion apt for this wedding season written in my story for Jet Wings, the inflight magazine for Jet Airways, November 2017. Happy Reading 🙂

From elegant lariats to glitzy arm cuffs, statement jewellery has made quite an impact on this year’s fashion weeks’ runway. What works as a statement piece is largely subjective, for instance, a single piece of traditional Indian ornament such as a choker or kada can make a statement by itself. To make a favourable and long-lasting impact, design, aesthetics and styling play key roles.

OF MANY HUES

The popularity of coloured diamonds has picked up and they have caught the fancy of Indian consumers as well. Runway fashion is seeing a combination of jewellery with unusual rose-cut, old mine-cut diamonds combined with lesser- known gemstones and carvings; briolette diamonds have captured the attention of many.

Sophie Turner of Game of Thrones fame, sashayed down the red carpet at the 2016 Emmy Awards wearing a yellow diamond ring by Forevermark with matching earrings and a necklace studded with pear and round yellow diamonds. Jewellery with big gemstones are a perfect example of classic, heritage and bold jewellery. Actress Sonam Kapoor’s bold oversized polki nose ring worn with a vintage sari and a jacket at the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in 2013, is a case in point.

Style Tip: Opt for an attire in neutral shades, if you’re planning to wear coloured diamond jewellery or bold gemstone jewellery; to ensure the colour of your ornament stands out. Or you can contrast the gemstones with your outfit, e.g. purple/tanzanite or yellow sapphire with a wine coloured bridal lehenga.

LAYERED NECKLACES

This is one category where most women are prone to making mistakes. Bold, layered necklaces, even from a distance, can be eye-catching. In this case, it is suggested that you skip wearing any other jewellery.

You don’t have to buy a saat lada or seven-layered necklace, or a nau lakha or nine-layered necklace. Simply recreate the look by putting together a few necklaces of varying lengths; start with a choker and continue to add layers.

Style Tip: When wearing multiple layers, odd numbers work better.

CHOKER OR BOLD NECKLACES

Be it an art deco, avant garde, traditional Indian design, or antique jewellery, a statement choker will capture everyone’s attention. If you’re planning to wear a broad and bold choker, then keep the other jewellery simple.

Actress Rekha’s look in the 1984 Bollywood film Utsav is a good example. For a grand look, you can wear heavy chokers as worn by Aishwarya Rai in Jodha Akbar and Deepika Padukone in the (to be released) Padmavati.

Style Tip: Pair up your choker pieces with off- shoulder tops for a trendy look.

SHOULDER DUSTERS, EAR CRAWLERS AND CHANDELIERS

Be it polki and gemstone studded shoulder duster, clean motifs studded with diamonds, or a textured chaandbaali or jhumkas, there’s something for every occasion. Any of these ear adornments worn with a little black dress can make heads turn. Another trend in vogue is wearing mismatched earrings. Charlize Theron’s diamond chandeliers looked sensual at the Oscar 2017 red carpet.

Style Tip: When wearing any of these over a traditional or western outfit, let the jewellery do the talking. However, if you do wish to add, pair it with a cocktail ring or cuff.

COCKTAIL RINGS, TWO/THREE FINGER RINGS, STACKABLE RINGS

Bigger is better in this case. You can experiment with different metals, gemstones and textures. When one finger ring isn’t enough, opt for a design that spreads over your two, three or all fingers. Stacking rings is another option – add diamond bands with your solitaire ring. An over- sized thumb ring or aarsi adds that sleekness.

Style Tip: Any of the above earring styles to complete the look. However think different and experiment the look with a bold cuff or armlet or a medallion. Manicured nails are a must!
